Picturing America in Michigan

Fall 2009 Museum Partnership Program


Michigan Humanities Council (www.michiganhumanities.org)presents the Picturing America in Michigan Museum Partnership.  The Council has partnered with 11 of Michigan’s leading art institutions to offer museum and in-school programs for Michigan classrooms participating in Picturing America.  Classrooms may receive up to $500 from the Council to cover fees and/or busing costs.  GRANTS GIVEN ON A FIRST-COME FIRST-SERVE BASIS.

All programs emphasize American art as a vehicle for examining American history.  Choose a program, contact the Saginaw Art Museum to reserve a spot, make your travel arrangements, and apply to the Council to cover expenses.

The Programs

(K1)  Life of a Lumber Baron
Venue:  Museum Grade Levels:  3 – 6
Availability:  9/1/09 – 12/31/09            Fee:  None

Learn about Saginaw as a lumber town and the lumbering family that originally owned the home in which the Saginaw Art Museum is housed.  Tours will incorporate particular images and objects as they relate to Michigan.

(K2)  Native American Art:  Beauty and Use
Venue:  Museum                                    Grade Levels: 4 – 6
Availability:  9/01/09 – 12/31/09            Fee:  $2/ student

Students explore various items used and created by Native Americans of the Great Lakes region.  After learning about items in the collection, students will have an opportunity to create their own works in the studio classroom.

(K3)  American Art Tour
Venue:  Museum                                    Grade Levels:  7 – 12
Availability:  0 /01/09 – 12/31/09            Fee:  Non; optional art project $2/ student

Docent-led tours of American art including works by artists from the 1900s to the present.  Tours can be customized to meet your group’s needs.  Art projects may be added.

(K4)  American Art:  New Developments
Venue:  Museum or classroom            Grade Levels:  3 – 12
Availability:  9/01/09- 12/31/09            Fee:  $5/ student plus travel ($0.445/ mile)

PowerPoint presentation of American artists or related artists in Picturing America.  Content difficulty increases based upon grade level.  Requirements:  computer projector and screen; classroom-supplied computer helpful but not necessary.

(K5)  Native American Art Survey
Venue:  Museum or classroom            Grade Levels:  3 – 12
Availability:  9/01/09 – 12/31/09            Fee:  $5/ student plus travel ($0.445/mile)

Explore the arts of the Indians of the Woodlands, the Great Plains, the Pacific Northwest, and the Southwest in this survey.  The lesson incorporates a hands-on experience with items from the Great Lakes Indians.
