Art Encounter: Community Altar Picture Frames

October 19, 2024

On November 2nd, SAM is hosting a Dia de los Muertos event. Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2 and involves family and friends gathering to remember friends and family members who have died. Altars (ofrendas) are created by families to honor loved ones who have passed away.
At the event and the following week, we want to welcome anyone who wants to add a photo of a deceased loved one to the community altar. It will be on display from November 2-9, along with other community ofrendas.
On October 19, please bring your 4×6 photo of a family member or friend (preferably a copy, the museum is not responsible for lost items and we don’t want you to lose something special). From 1:00-4:00 pm, you can decorate your matte with tissue paper, paint, marigolds, and more.
We will then display your photo on the community altar for Dia de los Muertos (Nov 2-9). You can pick up your photo and matte during open hours Nov 13-16.
