Saginaw Art Museum Photography Month 2021

The Saginaw Art Museum will be hosting its second annual Photography Month Workshop series featuring instruction provided by local photographers on various subjects. Plan on joining us for one of these outstanding sessions and our Photographer Mixer on October 20. Registration is required.

Title: Sports Photography for Absolute Beginners | REGISTER
Instructor: Mike Kolleth
Date: Wednesday, September 22, 2021 / Time: 6:30pm

Description: Photographing your athlete in action is a challenge. But it can also be a joy and a wonderful form of artistic expression. In this course, you’ll learn to “make” –  not simply, “take” — impactful sports images. The course is designed for absolute beginners. It is packed with practical tips that will put you on the path to making memories that will last a lifetime. Prerequisites: An interchangeable lens camera and len(ses), 30 minutes of pre-reading/watching you will receive in advance, and the ability to program your camera to the instructor’s specifications before the class.

About the Instructor:
From professional baseball cards to highway billboards, Mike Kolleth has been making impactful sports pictures for amateur, college, and professional teams for decades. He is also the President and CEO of the Saginaw Art Museum and Temple Theatre, making him uniquely qualified to help students create sports images that are also works of art. All profits from his sports photography are donated to local non-profit sports organizations, primarily Special Olympics Michigan

 

Title: People in the Wild: Environmental Portraiture Basics | REGISTER
Instructor: Phil Eich
Date: Wednesday, September 29, 2021
Time: 6:30 pm

Description: In this workshop, we’ll cover basic light and posing principles…and then get to work! After instruction, we’ll play a version of “speed dating” with attendees practicing what they’ve learned by taking photos of each other and giving each other feedback in a supportive environment. Bring your camera or your phone!

Phil Eich owns and operates Full Steam Social Media and Storyville Social, and creates the content for Riverfront Saginaw.

 

Title: In the Studio: Portrait Photography Start to Finish | REGISTER
Instructor: Xavier Holmes
Date: October 6, 2021
Time: 6:30pm

Description:  In this workshop you will learn about posing subjects, cut/flag light, reflecting light, how to use eye lightener and basic editing techniques.
About the Instructor:

Xavier Holmes is a professional photographer who has been operating his business for five years. His focus is on portraits (senior, family, business) and weddings. His passion for photography is reflected in his ability to capture incredible moments with his clients.

 

 

Title: Any Given Block: Photo Walking 101 | REGISTER
Instructor: Thor Rasmussen
Date: Wednesday, October 13, 2021
Time: 7:30 AM
Description: Taking a walk with your camera lets you slow down and observe space in a new way. Rather than zipping down the street in your car, walking a block gives you the opportunity to pause and compose images you might have missed before. During this photo walk. Participants will meet up in Downtown Saginaw MI and go for a walk before meeting back at the museum to share the images they just took straight out of the camera. It will give you an opportunity to practice not just taking photographs, but thinking about how you talk about your photographs.

About the Instructor: Thor is a professional photographer among other things with a special interest in documenting people and special events. His work has been exhibited in galleries locally in his hometown of Saginaw and across the United States. His observation of the word comes from well over 100 photo walks in the past two years.
