Wonders of the Region: Hidden Gems Through Student Eyes
What makes a place special? For this exhibition, middle and high school students from Bay, Gratiot, Midland, and Saginaw counties were invited to explore and share the “hidden gems” that bring wonder to their communities. These are the places and experiences that may not always be widely known, but hold deep meaning for the people who live nearby. From cherished parks and cultural festivals to local landmarks and community organizations, the featured works reflect the richness and variety of life in our region. Students in grades 6 through 12 were tasked to create original artwork using any medium of their choice, highlighting these hidden gems in their community
A panel of judges evaluated the submissions with careful attention to five key areas. They considered how well each piece reflected the theme of uncovering a hidden gem. They also assessed the artistic merit and technical quality of the work, as well as the creativity and visual originality shown in the presentation of the theme. Judges worked to ensure a variety of concepts and communities were represented in the final selection. Finally, each student’s written interpretation was reviewed for clarity, thoughtfulness, and connection to their chosen subject.
This exhibition is a celebration of young artists and the remarkable places they’ve chosen to honor. Through their eyes, we are invited to rediscover the beauty, wonder, and meaning in the places that shape our lives—one hidden gem at a time. The top 14 winners will have their piece featured in the 2026 Community Calendar mailed to local communities and stakeholders.
