In Attentive Figures & Tender Mechanisms, Jessica Harvey approaches structure as a way of thinking. Her kinetic sculptures operate through balance, leverage, and calibrated motion, proposing that meaning can emerge from systems rather than image alone. Wood, metal, wire, motors, and sensors remain visible, allowing the structural logic of each work to sit on the surface. Hinges pivot. Weight shifts. A small adjustment travels through the frame and alters the whole. Structure is the philosophy here, where balance and adjustment reveal how meaning is built through relation rather than image.
The figures move in restrained sequences. A structure turns toward something. A form pauses. A mechanism registers presence and responds with subtle change. These actions unfold slowly and invite close looking. Or maybe they are looking at you? Some works react to touch or proximity, creating a situation in which attention becomes reciprocal. The viewer does not simply observe the system but participates in it.
Harvey’s practice suggests a philosophy of responsiveness. Each sculpture depends on alignment, calibration, and ongoing adjustment. Nothing functions in isolation. Motion emerges through relation. By foregrounding how small inputs create measurable change, the work proposes attentiveness as a structural principle. These machines don’t merely sit in the space, they listen within it.
All are welcome to join the museum for an opening reception on April 30, 2026 5:30pm. Registration is appreciated but not required to attend.
