Susie McColgan: Into the Light
November 4, 2026–March 26, 2027
Saginaw Art Museum & Gardens

Color becomes emotion. Figures emerge, overlap, and dissolve. In Into the Light, Saginaw artist Susie McColgan explores how painting can express both what we see and what we feel.
Throughout her career, McColgan has explored the expressive possibilities of color, light, and the human figure. Rooted in portraiture and representational painting, her work draws from the heightened color of Fauvism and the shifting light and atmosphere of Impressionism. Color and light become tools for communicating emotion, energy, and psychological presence.
Into the Light traces McColgan’s development from accomplished realism toward a more fluid relationship between representation and abstraction. In recent works, clearly defined figures begin to fragment and overlap. Faces emerge from fields of color, boundaries between bodies and their surroundings dissolve, and light moves through the composition itself.
Across the exhibition, recognizable subjects become starting points for exploring color, form, memory, connection, and the experience of seeing. Visitors are invited to look closely at the space between observation and expression, where a familiar face or figure can open into something unexpected.
