About the Gardens

Architect Charles A. Platt designed the gardens at the museum at the same time he created the Ring Mansion in 1902. He filled the formal garden with various plants and flowers to bloom from early spring until the first frost, except for two weeks in August. The garden featured wild roses, German irises, peonies, hollyhocks, Easter lilies, and chrysanthemums. Three false papyruses and water lilies adorned the fountain, while potted plants and flowers lined the stone paths and fences. The tool house and pavilion, designed to complement the house, were draped with grapevines and accompanied by outdoor sculptures.
Peacocks and pheasants occasionally roamed the garden, which was contained by five different fences.
Platt designed the bosco (wild garden) to appear natural yet follow his design principles. The main entrance, an open gate in the northwest corner of the formal garden, led to an informal sitting area and a small pond. The bosco’s center featured ferns and daylilies along an artificial stream, with a narrow path ending on the south side.

The garden, despite undergoing several transformations since its inception, continues to flourish from spring through fall. Remaining true to its original purpose, it serves as a hospitable space for special events, including museum gatherings, educational programs, and private functions. The garden’s upkeep is made possible by dedicated volunteers and the generous support of the community.
