Last night, the Midland Center for the Arts presented a mesmerizing production of The Wizard of Oz, proving once again the power of live theater to transport audiences to magical worlds. Every aspect of the show, from the technical design to the performances, demonstrated a remarkable level of professionalism and creativity that captivated the audience from start to finish. One might call this a Diet-Broadway.

One of the most impressive elements of the production was the use of practical effects, particularly during the tornado sequence. The tornado was brought to life using a traveler system, and the swirling movement the effect. Coupled with projections on the scrim, it gave the impression of Dorothy being swept away to a fantastical world, a technical feat that elicited audible gasps from the crowd. The use of projections throughout the production, such as in the Emerald City scenes involving Oz, added depth and vibrancy to the staging, immersing the audience in the story.

The flying sequences were another standout element. The first time Dorothy (played by Kelcie Corrion) took flight was unexpected and absolutely breathtaking. It was a moment of pure theatrical magic, and the audience reacted with awe. Similarly, the Wicked Witch of the West (portrayed by Mackenzie Hopkins) used her flying sequences to make a dramatic impact, her exuberant personality and wickedly hilarious antics drawing laughter and applause with every appearance.

The performances by the cast were universally strong, with each actor bringing depth and personality to their roles. Claire Patterson as Aunt Em/Glinda brought grace and warmth, while Samuel J. Nowak as the Scarecrow, Jack Doyle as the Tin Man, and Josh Abram as the Cowardly Lion formed a delightful trio, each contributing humor and heart. The Lion’s big comedic moments, in particular, had the audience roaring with laughter and earned some of the loudest cheers of the night. It’s clear the cast poured their hearts into these iconic characters, honoring the original film while making the roles their own.

The ensemble cast, both adult and youth, added richness to the production with their high-energy dance numbers and crowd scenes. The choreography was dynamic and varied, ranging from elegant tap routines to lively group dances that brought Munchkinland and the Emerald City to life. Kelli Jolly’s choreography struck a perfect balance between technical complexity and theatricality, ensuring that each number was both visually stunning and emotionally engaging.

Musically, the production was flawless, thanks to the live orchestra under the direction of Jim Hohmeyer. With over 80 inputs onstage, the sound design with Caleb Hopper at the helm, was a marvel. The orchestra played so seamlessly that, at times, it was easy to forget they were even there—an ultimate compliment to their skill and the sound mixing team. The music felt as polished as a professional recording, yet retained the organic energy that only live performance can provide.

Special recognition must go to the production team for their attention to detail. Directed by Bill Anderson Jr., the show maintained a brisk pace without losing any of the story’s charm. The costume and set design captured the whimsical essence of Oz while adding fresh touches. The lighting design, particularly during moments like the Wicked Witch’s fiery entrances, heightened the drama and excitement.

This production was truly a community effort, showcasing the talents of a large cast and crew, including a youth ensemble that added charm and enthusiasm. The inclusion of local businesses, such as Structures Salon and Spa in Freeland, MI, further demonstrated the theater’s connection to the community. It’s clear that everyone involved, from the performers to the backstage crew, poured their hearts into this production, and the audience responded in kind, with cheers, laughter, and a standing ovation.

In the end, The Wizard of Oz at the Midland Center for the Arts was a triumph, blending timeless storytelling with cutting-edge technical wizardry. From the unexpected flying sequences to the brilliant performances, every element of the production came together to create an unforgettable theatrical experience. This show reminded us of the magic of live theater, where every moment feels alive and unique. Bravo to the cast, crew, and orchestra for a night of pure enchantment.
