Legally Blonde

Venue: Malcolm Field Theatre

I had the opportunity to attend the opening night production of Legally Blonde-the Musical, presented by the SVSU Theater Department, directed by Tommy Wedge.  What a fun show! This is a quick moving play told mostly through song with some dialogue to inform the audience from one scene to the next.  The music is upbeat and fun.  The choreography is high energy. The actors really bring the characters to life.

Director Tommy Wedge chose a powerhouse cast to tell Elle’s story. Zoe Gilbert’s depiction of Elle Woods, “Malibu Barbie” turned Harvard Law student, is both flirty and serious.  Jenna Glazier’s, Paulette Buonufonte, is delightful as the ditzy best friend.  Vivienne Kensington, Elle’s nemesis, is deftly played by Stephanie Crachiolo.  And Elle’s main supporter, Emmett Forrest, is portrayed by the down to earth Sam Kreps.  Many others round out the cast in both speaking roles and ensemble.

The Vocal Director, Erin Whitfield, Music Director, Dr. Norman Wika and Choreographer, Peggy Mead-Finizio, form a triumphant trio, bringing so many different musical elements together in a cohesive and exciting song and dance production.  Scenic Designer, Jerry Dennis, is able to create the illusion of so many different spaces with elevated platforms, small set pieces and images projected onto screens at the back of the stage.  Lighting and Sound are directed by Alex Dubowski and Tyler Obermiller, respectively.

Legally Blonde is a fun, fun show to watch and the SVSU Theater Department certainly does it justice.  The show is sold out, so to those who have tickets, Enjoy! And to those who don’t, make sure you come out to the next production of the SVSU Theater Department. You won’t be disappointed.
