Saginaw Area Concert Band cruises the high seas with community concerts

Have you ever wondered what happened to your band friends or music teachers from school? Well as it turns out they are still playing music right here in the Great Lakes Bay community. The Saginaw Area Concert Band was established over twenty years ago and performs up to twenty concerts a year.

They are an outreach band, meaning many of their concert’s help raise money and supplies for local non-profits like Hidden Harvest and Major Chords for Minors. They also take their fifty-person ensemble to local nursing homes and places like the Veterans hospital. Their mission is to make music accessible to people within our community that may not be able to attend a concert otherwise.

The concert band performs four different seasons throughout the year. With only a break in the summer you can catch them from August to June. They perform locally with concerts open to the community. This concert band has a unique multi-generational group of musicians. High school students all the way up to Octogenarian aged musicians come together in their shared love of performing music.

The Saginaw Area Concert Band can also be found at “Holidays in the heart of the city”. This holiday concert in Old Town Saginaw is a truly special way to kick off the Holiday season. Their most recent Spring concert theme of “On the high seas” guaranteed the audience a jaunty good time. We were treated to a wide variety of sea themed music pieces like “Marauders March” and “My Heart Will Go On”. SACB has a guest vocalist performing with them at concerts.  Peggy Knutson takes the stage to beautifully accompany the band for a few songs.

In a society that is becoming more individualistic the band continues to foster connection through music and community. They are also looking for new members. So, if you have musical talent and you would like to play with a welcoming group, I recommend joining SACB. And for those of us who have never picked up an instrument I encourage you to add the Saginaw Area Concert band to your radar for the fall season. Never underestimate how important it is to be in the audience, supporting your friends and neighbors’ talent!
